This post is for the faint-hearted. If you’re not courageous enough to try these insects, then at least try these five not-so-scary street food instead! Let’s start from the “normal” or “safer” ones. No insects, I promise!
1. Steamed Corn
What makes this special is that there are strips of coconut! Steamed coconuts are okay with just butter/salt and a touch of sugar, but coconuts really enhance the taste of these corns!
2. Pad Thai
Pad Thai is a must! This cheap noodle costs no more than a dollar, why not?
3. Fried Prawns
The fact that I have seafood allergy doesn’t deter me from eating them. If they are fresh, I’ll be fine. For some of us, street food might be “dirty” or “not fresh” or “yuck”; well whatever it is, this proves those thoughts wrong. The prawns are super fresh! They taste great too!
4. Chickens’ Hearts
There are a lot of grilled meat here but I chose to eat Chickens’ Hearts and have never regretted my decision. The texture is just right, the meat is juicy and tender, and the best thing of all – these lovely hearts are topped with a perfect savoury black sauce!
5. Goong Ten (Jumping Shrimp)
I thought this was weird but it was good! The shrimps are alive when you eat them! Of course, they might jump and prick the inner walls of your mouth but that’s the authenticity of this dish. A blend of sour, salty, sweet and spicy, this dish won’t fail to disappoint you!
